Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)

An environmental impact assessment (EIA) is an assessment of the possible impact—positive or negative—that a proposed project may have on the environment; considering natural, social and economic aspects. The purpose of the assessment is to ensure that decision makers consider the ensuing environmental impacts to decide whether to proceed with the project. The International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA) defines an environmental impact assessment as "the process of identifying, predicting, evaluating and mitigating the biophysical, social, and other relevant effects of development proposals prior to major decisions being taken and commitments made." After an EIA, the precautionary and polluter pays principles may be applied to prevent, limit, or require strict liability or insurance coverage to a project, based on its likely harms. Environmental impact assessments are sometimes controversial.

PLEDGE:

1. To take personal action to help solve the climate crisis by reducing my own CO2 pollution as much as I can and offsetting the rest to become "carbon neutral;"

2. To fight for a moratorium on the construction of any new generating facility that burns coal without the capacity to safely trap and store the CO2;

3. To work for a dramatic increase in the energy efficiency of my home, workplace, school, place of worship, and means of transportation;

4. To fight for laws and policies that expands the use of renewable energy sources and reduces dependence on oil and coal;

5. To plant new trees and to join with others in preserving and protecting forests; and,

6. To buy from businesses and support leaders who share my commitment to solving the climate crisis and building a sustainable, and prosperous world.
